The next Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO) will be elected on 23 June 2019 during the
41st session of the FAO Conference
- the highest governing body of the Organization.
The candidates to replace outgoing
Director-General José Graziano da Silva were each nominated by their respective governments, and are listed in alphabetical order by country:

Qu Dongyu (China),
·
Catherine Geslain-Lanéelle (France)
·
Davit Kirvalidze (Georgia)
Médi Moungui (Cameroon) announced the withdrawal of his candidature on 21 March 2019. On 13 June 2019, the Government of India announced the withdrawal
of the nomination of Ramesh Chand.

The day before the election, on 22 June, the three candidates will address the members of the FAO Conference.
The candidates’ address – 22 June, 2pm Rome time - and the voting session – 23 June, 10am Rome time - are open to media and will be webcast
live here.

McDougall Memorial Lecture and Zero Hunger side-events at the FAO Conference
There will be a series of
side-events
during the Conference (22-29 June) focused on progress across different regions towards reaching food security and nutrition; biodiversity; and youth’s role in agriculture.
On 22 June, Graça Machel will deliver the
McDougall Memorial Lecture
-delivered every two years by a prominent personality in the field of agriculture and hunger alleviation to honor Australian economist Frank Lidgett McDougall who was an effective advocate for FAO's creation.
FAO awarded Machel in 2018 with the honorary membership of the
FAO Nobel Peace Laureates Alliance for Food Security and Peace,
in recognition of her late husband Nelson Mandela's tireless struggle for freedom and peace.
Machel is an international advocate for women's and children's rights, co-founder with Mandela of The Elders group of global leaders.
The lecture, the conference proceedings, including
Director-General Graziano da Silva’s address on Monday 24 June, and the side-events are open to media and will also be
webcast live.
