* FAN coming of age!
Twenty-seven years after the Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service of the FAO's Fisheries Department released the first FAO Aquaculture Newsletter (FAN), the Aquaculture Branch of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department just published its sixtieth issue. On this occasion, a special editorial<http://www.fao.org/3/ca5223en/ca5223en.pdf> reviews the dramatic changes and progress the sector has achieved, and how FAO adapted to better serve its members countries. FAN is issued twice a year. It presents articles and views from the FAO aquaculture programme and highlights various aspects of aquaculture as seen from the perspective of both headquarters and the regional and sub-regional offices in the field.

This sixtieth edition of FAN is an opportunity to review the progress and development of the aquaculture sector over the past thirty years. This issue of FAN contains an editorial on "FAN coming of age!" and four main sections on: (1) Global aquaculture updates with an article from statistician's desk providing an overview of world aquaculture production and an update with latest available 2017 global production data; one article from the fish health specialists' desk on the continued technical assistance of FAO to reduce risks and enhance capacity to counter Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV); one article providing information on the fourth Global Conference on Aquaculture in 2020; one article on Aquatic genetic resources – Towards a global plan of action and one on the FAO-Shanghai Ocean University special workshop on social impact of rice-fish farming held in Shanghai. (2) Aquaculture updates by region offers information on ongoing projects, activities and events by region particularly: five articles for Asia- Pacific; two articles for Europe; three articles for Near East and North Africa; three articles for Latin America and the Caribbean; seven articles for Sub-Saharan Africa. (3) There are nine thematic articles on the following subjects: (i) Contribution of aquaculture to total fishery production: the 50-percent mark; (ii) Agroecology in aquaculture; (iii) The gender triad, a new paradigm for gender mainstreaming in aquaculture; (iv) Microalgae in aquatic animal feeds; (v) The sustainable development goals and the economic contribution of fisheries and aquaculture; (vi) Evaluating the impact of aquaculture on natural radioactivity in diets; (vii) Towards guidelines on sustainable aquaculture; (viii) Guidance on social issues relative to human and labour rights in fisheries and aquaculture value chains; (ix) Future food systems and diets: where is the fish? (4) The miscellaneous section contains three contributions with the following titles: (i) Let's talk about fish. Promoting aquaculture through social media channels; (ii) Towards an updated ISSCAAP classification to better suit the needs of aquaculture; (iii) Leveraging on aquaculture to improve global nutrition. The three last sections focus on new staff profiles in the FAO Aquaculture Branch, new FAO aquaculture publications and Calendar of events. Our colleague Joanna Tool, one of the victims of the tragic crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 near Addis Ababa on 10 March 2019 is also remembered in this issue.

* Towards the fourth Global Conference on Aquaculture in 2020
"Aquaculture for Food and Sustainable Development" will be the theme of this new Global Conference on Aquaculture, ten years after "Farming the Waters for People and Food" (Phuket, Thailand) and twenty years after "Aquaculture in the Third Millennium" (Bangkok, Thailand). With aquaculture now providing more than half of the global aquatic food supplies, and increasingly contributing to the sustainability of integrated food systems, the fourth Global Conference on Aquaculture 2020 will be held in Shanghai, China, from 26 to 30 October 2020, to review the achievements and challenges in world aquaculture development and build consensus on a way forward for sustainable development of the sector. Information will be available in due course at https://aquaculture2020.org/
