Dear Subscriber, We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update. _________________ * The FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-04=100) averaged 223.0 points in July 2019, barely changed (+0.7 points) from its value a month earlier and marking its fifth successive month of remarkable stability. July prices held steady in all the major rice market segments, except in that of Lower Quality Indica rice. In that segment, quotations rose by 1.1 percent month-on-month largely as a reflection of tight broken availabilities in some leading exporters. * Trading activities remained quiet across much of Asia during July, counterbalancing support provided by concerns over the progress of the rains in the region, as well as firmer currencies in some leading exporters. As a result, July quotations of Indica rice were steady or mildly weaker in the major origins. Exceptions to this trend included values of parboiled rice in India and of fully broken rice in Thailand. These inched up by about 1 percent, each, underpinned by thinning exportable availabilities. Quotations of Vietnamese 25% broken rice also strengthened relative to the multi-year lows touched in June, aided by easing harvest pressure and improvements in the quality of summer-autumn crops. In the Americas, long-grain prices were unchanged in Argentina and Brazil, while they rebounded to a six-month high in the United States, buoyed by another sale to Iraq, which added to a healthy pace of sales to traditional outlets and lingering uncertainty over the impact of weather on 2019 crops. Quotations moved in the opposite direction in Uruguay, weakening for the third successive month due to a slow pace of sales. * According to the Index, international rice prices in the first seven months of 2019 were 2.7 percent below their levels in the corresponding period of 2018. __________________ For more information on prices, you can consult the Food Price Monitoring and Analysis Tool (http://www.fao.org/giews/pricetool/), which gives access to quotations of major traded products, including the high quality Thai white rice 100% B and the 100% broken rice Thai A1 Super, from 2000 onwards.
