*Global CA-CoP* *CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE* *for sustainable agriculture and land management* Dear Susbscribers, Please see herebelow a self-explanatory message from Dennis Garrity regarding The EverGreening the Earth Campaign. Apologies for any cross-posting. *Amir Kassam * *Moderator* *Global CA-CoP* e-mail: [log in to unmask] URL: http://www.fao.org/conservation-agriculture *Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance (no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops); and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops), along with other complementary good agricultural production and land management practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all continents, involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual cropland systems, perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems, agroforestry systems, crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland systems, organic production systems and rice-based systems. Conservation Tillage, Reduced Tillage and Minimum Tillage are not Conservation Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own* (more at: http://www.fao.org/conservation-agriculture). ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Garrity, Dennis (ICRAF) <[log in to unmask]> Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2020 at 09:02 Subject: Posting to Global Conservation Agriculture Community of Practice (CA-CoP) about The EverGreening the Earth Campaign To: Amir Kassam <[log in to unmask]> Dear Amir, I’d like to bring to the attention of our CA Community of Practice the *EverGreening the Earth Campaign,* which was launched during the recent Climate Week at the UN Headquarters in New York. The campaign goal is to concretely address the existential climate emergency by achieving the massive scaling-up of evergreening practices under six target areas, and to be *drawing down from the atmosphere at least 20 billion tons of CO2 annually by the year 2050*, while improving the lives of hundreds of millions of the rural poor. The latest version of the white paper that describes the initiative in detail is available at: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7l9ksvcmbm66y1a/EverGreening_CampaignPaper.pdf?dl=0 The Campaign has the ambition and scale that could be the basis for a very interesting collaboration with many of our collaborators who are working diligently to advance Conservation Agriculture around the world. Target 2 of the Campaign focuses on the scaling-up of practices to increase soil carbon, particularly through CA and Conservation Agriculture with Trees. I’d like to cordially invite readers to share their reactions to the white paper, and to launch a conversation about how we might collaborate on achieving its goals together. I look forward to continuing this discussion in the coming weeks and months. The Campaign is being championed by The Global EverGreening Alliance ( evergreening.org), whose 30 or so member organizations include nearly all of the major development and conservation NGOs. It’s mission focuses on implementing very large scaling-up initiatives, of which several are under way with others under development. The Alliance welcomes new members, and I would be very happy to hear from all those who may be interested in joining.
