What
Biodiversity is the variety of life on earth, essential for our survival on this plant. It is key to overcome malnutrition, increase food production and build resilient livelihoods.
The alarming pace of biodiversity loss today threatens humankind with devastating consequences if it goes unchecked.
While changes to the climate may be reversible in time, there is no going back once species become extinct.
Why now
We can still change direction and focus on nature-based solutions that can restore biodiversity, protect and conserve the species and ecosystems to breathe life into landscapes for food and nutrition security.
The new framework, covering the period up to 2050, will be considered by the 196 Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) at the
UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP15), Kunming, China, 15-28 October 2020.
Why FAO
Due to the ongoing situation following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus 2019, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in consultation with the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the COP (Conference of the Parties) Presidency
and the Co-Chairs of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (WG2020-2), has decided that the second meeting of the Working Group will take place in Rome, Italy at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization
of the United Nations (FAO) on the same dates, 24 – 29 February 2020. This will be the second last negotiation session before COP15 in October.
The Director-General of FAO QU Dongyu will be welcoming delegates during the opening of the meeting through a key note speech on
24 February at 10 am – Follow the webcast here.
FAO experts will be available for interviews in English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish, on biodiversity in food systems, fisheries, forestry, pollination and genetic resources, among other subjects.
