*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting);  (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all
continents, involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual
cropland systems, perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems,
agroforestry systems, crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland
systems, organic production systems and rice-based systems. Conservation
Tillage, Reduced Tillage and Minimum Tillage are not Conservation
Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own* (more at:

insight:
This study looked at how CA has been modified in various regions around the
World and what processes occurred to enable CA uptake. The first finding is
that there was limited evidence that all three pillars of CA were adopted
in any region. They also identified several processes and developments
required to enable CA uptake. They conclude that for smallholder farmers in
Africa three key learnings are needed.

insight:
This study assessed the effects of medium term (5 years)  CA on total soil
N changes in bulk soils and aggregates, N20 and C02 emissions, GWP and
total C fixed in soils under maize-wheat cropping in the IGP. The
treatments included CT, ZT on narrow beds and wide beds with and without
residues. They conclude that PBB + R is better for soil N improvement  than
CT since it led to 36% and 8.2% higher biomass productivity of maize and
wheat, respectively and similar GHG intensity to CT plots.

insight:
Data on the adoption of conservation agriculture has been collected by
these authors since CA was first promoted to farmers. This is the latest
data they have compiled on this theme that is difficult to collect. They
suggest that CA in 2015-16 was 180 mha in 78 countries, an increase of 69%
and 42 more countries since 2008-09. The largest adoption is in South and
North America, followed by Australia and New Zealand, Asia, Russia and
Ukraine, Europe and Africa.

This paper looks at the research status of CA in South Africa by reviewing
available literature.They conclude that CA generally had a positive effect
on soil properties and crop yield. However, limitations of poor recording,
insufficient data, and short trial periods were apparent. They suggest more
local research with farmers is needed to support best management practices.

This 5 year long term tillage study looked at 3 tillage practices,
zero-tillage, permanent beds and conventional tillage on SOC build-up under
different nutrient levels in a maize-wheat-mungbean system  in NW India. At
higher temperatures, higher SOC decay rates were observed under CT and

insight:
This 3 year field study with farmers in NW India to evaluate the effect of
tillage and nutrient use  on crop yields, water productivity and
profitability of MW + mungbean systems.  They showed that CA based
treatments with mungbean and site specific nutrient management provided
opportunities for enhancing crop yield and water use efficiency, and
profitability of maize-wheat systems.

insight:
This study looked at two tillage practices, conventional and no-till plus
mulch weeding (NWM) and fertilizer on earthworm abundance, soil carbon and
soil aggregation two years after grassland was converted to agricultural
land. After two years earthworms were only found in the NWM plots where
macro-aggregates and soil carbon were also higher than CT. This will have
significant consequences for sustainable crop yields.

Africa contributes the smallest amount of GHG emissions but is the most
vulnerable to climate change. This includes rising temperatures and
changing rainfall patterns but also increasing severity and frequency of
droughts, hear stress and floods. CA enhances biodiversity and natural
biological processes above and below ground to contribute to better water
and nutrient use efficiency and help sustain productivity. This review
looks at looks at carbon sequestration in different agro-climatic regions
of Africa.

insight:
This paper looked at biophysical, economic and farm characteristics to
assess CA in Zambia for continuous maize cropping compared to conventional
tillage. There was a large variation in in biophysical, economic and farm
characteristics and yields associated with CA ranged from -37% to +70%
compared to CT. Highlighted differences relevant to the suitability of CA
included mineral fertilizer application rates, ownership of livestock, soil
texture and rainfall.
