Q1. On 11th March 2020, WHO made the assessment that Covid-19 can be characterized as a pandemic. There is a belief that pandemics are not covered under most health insurances. Are WFP employees covered by health insurance for Covid-19?
WFP Insurance policies do not change in case of epidemic/pandemic and all insurance provisions apply normally to covid-19 as they do to all other infectious diseases. This means that medical expenses connected with the diagnosis and treatment of covid-19 are covered under the various WFP insurance plans under the regular applicable clauses (e.g. purchase of medications 80% coverage, in-patient expenses 100% coverage, room costs 100% coverage up to a certain ceiling, etc).
Q2. What is covered by WFP health insurance plans?
Hereby a summary of covid-19 related expenses and how they are covered under WFP insurance plans:
A. FACE MASKS: Not covered, except for infected patients and healthcare professionals caring for affected population.
B. DIAGNOSTIC TESTING: Covered for initial diagnosis and also further follow up if initial testing is positive.
C. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: Diagnosis and treatment are covered as per any other condition according to medical necessity in line with the terms of the insurance plan.
D.QUARANTINEANTINE IN HOSPITAL:
• Quarantine for people without infection is not covered (for example people returning from a high-risk area);
• Quarantine during diagnosis and treatment is covered as per medical necessity;
• If diagnosis is confirmed or if there are other reasons (e.g. concomitant conditions) to warrant quarantine in hospital, this is covered.
