Thank you Peter for sharing. *Amir Kassam * *Moderator* *Global CA-CoP* e-mail: [log in to unmask] URL: http://www.fao.org/conservation-agriculture *Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance (no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops); and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops), along with other complementary good agricultural production and land management practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all continents, involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual cropland systems, perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems, agroforestry systems, crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland systems, organic production systems and rice-based systems. Conservation Tillage, Reduced Tillage and Minimum Tillage are not Conservation Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own* (more at: http://www.fao.org/conservation-agriculture). ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Peter Hobbs <[log in to unmask]> Date: Fri, 3 Apr 2020 at 21:30 Subject: April 2020 Conservation Agriculture Research Scoopit Update To: Amir Kassam <[log in to unmask]> Dear Amir: Here is our April 2020 Conservation Agriculture Research Update. It used Biofunctool®, a set of in-field indicators, to monitor changes in soil biological functioning. Biofunctool® was used to assess the impact of a conventional tillage (CT) and three CA annual-based cropping systems on soil health on a Cambodian Oxisol. Eight indicators related to the three soil functions were monitored and integrated into a Soil Quality index (SQI), i.e. the Biofunctool® Index. An analysis of soil carbon dynamics showed that CA supports short-term soil organic carbon stabilization compared to CT. This study demonstrates that Biofunctool® is a robust, relevant, time-and cost-effective in-field assessment tool that can be used in multiple ways including cropping system management, capacity building of local stakeholders, and policy dialogue. <http://sco.lt/4vGMnA?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/7GazOC?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/7YlJiK?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/7qve2S?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/895yMa?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> Long-term changes of soil chemical characteristics and maize yield in no-till conservation agriculture in a semi-arid environment of South Africa. <http://sco.lt/4wBYxs?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/4wBYxs?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> From linkinghub.elsevier.com <http://sco.lt/8RGIgi?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> - Today, 3:56 PM <http://sco.lt/4wBYxs?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> Sithole, N.J. & Magwaza, L.S. 2019. The experiment was evaluated 13 years after inception. The results indicated that SOC takes time to improve in conservation agricultural practices in a semi-arid environment and its increase is only confined to the soil surface. This increase in the soil surface is also associated with increased availability of the soil important nutrients. <http://sco.lt/4wBYxs?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/91axKy?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/9JlHf6?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/4wOlJQ?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/5EZ5dY?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> Biochar implications for sustainable agriculture and environment: A review <http://sco.lt/67Ys5Y?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/67Ys5Y?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> From linkinghub.elsevier.com <http://sco.lt/5WjPxg?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> - Today, 3:14 PM <http://sco.lt/67Ys5Y?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> Semida, W.M., Beheiry, H.R., Setamou, M., El-Mageed, T.A., Rady, M.M. & Nelson, S.D. 2019. Disposal of rice straw by burning is a favorite practice of farmers to clear the land for the next wheat crop but is a major health issue in NW India through air pollution. But it also leads to the loss of soil organic matter and essential nutrients, reduces microbial activities and the land more vulnerable to soil erosion. This paper looks at the impact of burning on microbial populations and and enzyme activities involved in biomass recycling. <http://sco.lt/983KXw?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/7s42Yi?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/8AEMsq?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/8SOhCy?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/8kZ1X6?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> Advances in Conservation Agriculture Volume 2: Practice and Benefits <http://sco.lt/4jGoXw?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/4jGoXw?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> From shop.bdspublishing.com <http://sco.lt/92jLrE?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> - Today, 2:32 PM <http://sco.lt/4jGoXw?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> Kassam, A. In the seventh rainy season of the experiment, maize growth parameters, yield attributes, yield, and water- and energy-use efficiency were highest at fixed plots under ZT. Overall, the results showed that CA-based ZT and PB practices coupled with diversified maize-based cropping systems effectively enhanced maize yield and SOC, as well as water- and energy-use efficiency, in northwestern India. <http://sco.lt/4szZke?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/68CT8C?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/6QMnSK?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/6iX7mS?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/70hS6a?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> Conservation agriculture had a strong impact on the sub-surface soil strength and root growth in wheat after a 7-year transition period <http://sco.lt/7oReeO?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/7oReeO?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> From linkinghub.elsevier.com <http://sco.lt/7IrmQi?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> - Today, 3:45 PM <http://sco.lt/7oReeO?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> Mondal, S., Chakraborty, D., Das, T.K., Shrivastava, M & Mishra, A.K. 2019. However, the authors of this comment argue that the mitigation calculations and interpretations by Gonzalez-Sanchez et al. (2019) are flawed and biased. <http://sco.lt/7KmZYe?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/6jfWIi?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/71pqcq?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/7K0Awy?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/7cAVH6?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> Advances in Conservation Agriculture Volume 1: Systems and Science <http://sco.lt/8OhuW8?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> <http://sco.lt/8OhuW8?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> From shop.bdspublishing.com <http://sco.lt/7uKpbE?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> - Today, 2:26 PM <http://sco.lt/8OhuW8?_tmc=7Sok88NR4R1Mbqnmct9nDU1oBsgs4S9rRdbVV0u04Ss&track=1> Kassam, A.
