*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting);  (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally

This study evaluated crop rotation and residue management under no-till for
various soil health indicators. The rotations were maize-fallow-maize;
maize-fallow-soybean;maize-wheat-maize; and maize-wheat-soybean. With and
without residue. They conclude that adoption of residue retention and
legume rotations improved soil biological parameters and thus soil health
and soil quality.

Zambia is suffering from climate variability and soil degradation. This
study assessed the crop yield, land and labor productivity of CA in Eastern
Zambia using on-farm trials. Three CA systems were compared to conventional
practice. The CA systems using a maize-legume rotation were ridge and
furrow, dibble stick and animal traction ripping. All had greater maize
yield than CP. Rotation of  maize with cowpea or soybean significantly
increased yields in all CA treatments. They conclude that CA-based cropping
systems have a good potential to improve food security by smallholder
farmers. .

This study looked at the effect of long-term (3 trials 12-26 years old) NT
on soil chemical and microbiological soil properties in Brazil.  The system
with annual succession of soybean plus maize intercropped with Brachiaria
brizantha grazed or not grazed in the off-season improved chemical and
microbial properties and contributed to carbon accumulation.

The objective of this study was to look at the effect of tillage, with and
without N on nitrous oxide emissions from Oxisols in Brazil under rainfed
maize. Tillage was conventional and no-till.  Nitrogen was 0 or 257kg/ha.
They found that NT + fertilizer had almost 50% of the N20 emissions of CT
per kg grain produced. Also, under maize cultivation the soil acted as a
N20 source, regardless of management.

Traditional agriculture in SS Africa is resulting in soil erosion and
degradation of soil quality. Rainfall is also more erratic and limits crop
production. This study looks at CA and drip irrigation compared to
traditional agriculture in 43 paired plots in 4 sites in Ethiopia, Ghana
and Tanzania. Biophysical data was collected and analyzed using the APEX
model. They conclude that CA with drip irrigation is an efficient local
strategy to improve crop production.

This study looks at the influence of NT and legume cover cropping on
microbial cell wall components and their relationship to soil aggregation
and carbon accumulation in Brazil. The study provides field-based evidence
that the accrual of fungal cell-wall constituents under NT and legume cover
cropping is a key process leading to soil aggregation and SOC accumulation.

This is a 10 year field study that assessed the effects of 4 combinations
of tillage and crop establishment with residue management on crop and water
productivity and profitability of rice-maize in Eastern India. The
treatments were ZT-DS rice followed by ZT maize; ZTDSR followed by maize on
permanent raised beds with residue; PBDSR followed by PBM w/o residues and
CT puddled TP rice followed by conventional tilled maize. They conclude
that CA-based systems under R-M rotation improves crop and water
productivity and farm income of smallholder production systems.

CA has been successful in South Africa in increasing productivity while
reduing inputs and future climate risks when adopted comprehensively. This
study looks at national survey data in S. Africa to investigate adoption
and the implications for monitoring, promotion and evaluation. This paper

This study over two growing seasons was done on a study started in 2009 in
a low input rice-based cropping system in Madagascar. CT was compared with
NT but both had residue retention. They had two rotations,  a 2-year maize
+ lablab followed by rice and a 3-year maize + Stylosanthes, followed by
Stylosanthes in the second year and rice in the third year. Results show
that 5-6 years of continuous NT plus retention of crop residues on the soil
surfacehad a positive effect on rice yield irrespective of weed pressure.
CA systems also significantly reduced weed pressure.

insight:
Traditional soil restoration in semi-arid Niger needs to be modified
because of climate change variability. The study used meta-analysis of case
studies, a field survey and the model AquaCrop to identify useful
practices. Adding mulch to the traditional "zai" system doubled yields.
This was also a useful practice for timely sowing confirming scholar and
farmer views.

Intensive tillage and crop residue burning is is causing soil degradation
and air pollution in NW India. This study was done on the rice-wheat system
of India where of declining SOC coupled with burning of rice residues.
Different management scenarios were evaluated. They conclude that medium
term adoption of climate smart practices involving NT, crop establishment,
residue management and crop diversification  can significantly improve
system productivity by improving SOC and soil biological quality while at
the same time stopping residue burning.

This paper suggests that an improved understanding of farmer decision
making is needed to answer the question "what forms of CA work, where and
why?" How does CA fit into complex farming systems? This paper compares the
different disciplinary approaches to evaluate CA in Malawi and
identification of knowledge gaps that intersect these disciplinary
approaches. This is followed by recommendations.
