Dear Partners and Observers, Activities have been ongoing in the context of the most recent workstream of AG4 (Towards Sustainable Wood Energy Development) on Woody biomass for forest landscape restoration (FLR) and sustainable livelihoods. In particular, we would like to update you on four recent activities: * Report - Collection of examples: Positive Relationships between Sustainable Wood Energy and Forest Landscape Restoration The report, published on the GBEP website<http://www.globalbioenergy.org/fileadmin/user_upload/gbep/docs/AG4/AG4_Collection_of_examples_links_sust._wood_energy_and_FLR_June2020.pdf> in June 2020 and attached for your convenience, collects examples from across the world on how improving the sustainability of wood energy value chains can reduce pressures on natural forests through better management practices and improved technologies; it brings together examples from across the value chain, from biomass production and transformation to the production and use of bioenergy and its by-products. The report includes country examples from Australia, Canada, Ghana, Lebanon, Kenya, Niger, Sri Lanka, Togo, USA and Zambia, as well as a regional example from sub-Saharan Africa; common lessons learned from these examples are also identified. * Webinar - Positive Relationships between Sustainable Wood Energy and Forest Landscape Restoration On the basis of the above-mentioned collection, a webinar was organized in May 2020 to present not only a general overview of this topic but also two specific cases from the report. The webinar was recorded and is available online<http://www.globalbioenergy.org/programmeofwork/working-group-on-capacity-building-for-sustainable-bioenergy/activity-group-4/webinar-sustainable-wood-energy-and-forest-landscape-restoration/ar/>. * Video - Sustainable wood energy and FLR The GBEP Secretariat has developed a short video to explain the linkages between sustainable wood energy and FLR. It is available in a short version and also a longer version that presents the links and contributions to the SDGs. Both versions (short<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FniFP-5dYtc> and long<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNmN1EskJ3Y>) are available to view online. * Report - International dialogues on Forest Landscape Restoration and Wood Energy In the context of the collaboration between FAO/GBEP, GIZ and IEA Bioenergy on FLR and Bioenergy, GBEP (along with both collaborators and with generous funding from GIZ) has organized and guided a number of international and national dialogues on this topic. The paper presenting the outcomes of three of these dialogues - international interactive session at the Global Landscape Forum (GLF) held in Accra (Ghana) in October 2019 and two "National dialogues on Wood Energy and Forest Landscape Restoration" in Togo and in Ghana in January 2020 - has recently been published and is available online<http://www.fao.org/3/ca9289en/ca9289en.pdf>. This paper presents the main outcomes of the stakeholder consultations performed within this project. It outlines the identified opportunities to generate enhanced synergies among bioenergy and FLR stakeholders in the continent of Africa, and the identified barriers that prevent a wider adoption of these sustainable FLR and modern bioenergy integrated systems, both at national and at regional level. It then presents the final recommendations - addressed to international agencies actively working on this thematic area and spatial context, and to national policy and decision makers - and ultimately proposes potential follow up activities that will facilitate a gradual transition towards sustainable FLR and modern bioenergy integrated systems, thus accelerating the achievement of common goals.
