the livestock sector plays a key role in sustainable agricultural development.
It contributes directly or indirectly to each of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These contributions can be categorized under four strategic priority areas, or sustainability domains: food security, nutrition and healthy diets; inclusive economic growth and improving livelihoods; animal health and welfare; and natural resources and climate change. For each of these strategic priority areas, the challenges and opportunities for the livestock sector were discussed during the recent FAO Committee on Agriculture (COAG 27), as well as the need for a holistic, inclusive and integrated approach to policy and technical actions for achieving the SDGs.
