 Following the introduction and spread of LSD into South Asia,
FAO conducted a
qualitative risk assessment on the
Introduction and spread of lumpy skin disease in South, East and Southeast Asia.

This qualitative risk assessment is a technical document for Members and country veterinary services, assessing the likelihood of introduction and/or spread of LSD in 23 countries in South, East and Southeast Asia based on information available up to 31 October 2020.

The assessment provides:

  • an update on LSD epidemiology and disease situation in the countries;
  • current Knowledge of drivers of LSD introduction and spread within the region including live cattle and buffalo trade and trade of products within the region;
  • a qualitative risk assessment for the likelihood of introduction and spreadincluding the risk pathways;
  • likely economic impact of LSD introduction into the region;
  • an overview of LSD prevention and control approaches including vaccination;

Through this assessment, we aim to support countries with the planning of national prevention and control strategies, providing a strong economic justification for vaccination and a regional approach to harmonize control measures.
