Dear FFF partners,
Please find below and attached information and invitation to FFF to join the legal and sustainable wood coalition. It would be very good if you could read the information. We will discuss during the team meeting next week if there is interest in the FFF partners to join the coalition and how we would do it.
Cheers,
Jhony

Hi Thais,

This is excellent and I am glad that you have cc'd Sophie and Jhony. My only caveat are any constraints that the FFF team and partners may have to fully engage - but Sophie and Jhony know what is possible - feel free to reach out to them directly to follow up (but keep me in the loop)..

Thanks for reaching out on this,

Andrew

Subject: Invitation to join Legal and Sustainable Wood coalition
Importance: High

Dear Andrew,

I am writing to you in your capacity of officer in charge of the FFF in FAO.
As you know, since 2017, FAO has been leading efforts to promote sustainable wood and strengthen its positioning in the international developmental agenda. Following a very successful international meeting in 2017, the Sustainable Wood for a Sustainable World (SW4SW) was launched as a joint initiative of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), which brings together FAO, ITTO, CIFOR, the CITES Secretariat, the World Bank and the WWF to support sustainable wood value chains and their contributions to the SDGs and the circular bioeconomy.

Despite the lack of donors, we were able to put forward catalyzing activities to improve the understanding, management and finance for sustainable wood value chains, the role of wood in the bioeconomy, and the importance of associating sustainable wood value chains to forest restoration efforts. The Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) has been a strong informal partner of the SW4SW, contributing to the formulation of strategies and delivery of very concrete actions. This partnership has generated very positive results, with concrete actions and products.

Recognizing the impact of the SW4SW, the Secretariat of the XV World Forestry Congress requested the organization of the plenary "The most ancient material taking us to the future". We believe this is the right opportunity to bring together all those actors committed to sustainable wood value chains and with concrete examples to launch an international coalition to promote sustainable wood at global, regional and national level. This coalition shall allow not only the improvement of understanding of sustainable wood with clarification of its impacts on the environment, livelihoods and the general economy, but also trigger partnerships and collaboration for the dissemination of good practices and innovation.

Our strategy at this stage is to bring together a small number of partners with substantive work and engagement. I am writing to invite the FFF to be a member and support the launch of the coalition to promote legal and sustainable wood value chains. We are lining up some of the most relevant global stakeholders, such as the producer associations, certification bodies, governments committed to sustainable wood production, consumption and trade, as well as international organizations. As an outcome of the WFC plenary, we envisage the official launch of the coalition, accompanied by a three-year global communication campaign to promote sustainable wood production. The initial drafts of the plenary concept note and of the "Replaced with Wood" are here attached.

In order to materialize the launch of this coalition at the WFC, we would envisage collaboration from the FFF to:

-                        Identify champions of sustainable wood value chains (companies, communities, countries) to illustrate the feasibility of having wood as a key material of a sustainable future;

-                        Develop and disseminate a survey to be conducted ahead of the WFC to identify the perceptions and requirements to improve acceptance of wood as a sustainable material;

-                        Together with the other partners, develop a small number of principles to define sustainable wood value chains, to which the like-minded organizations involved in the coalition can agree to and pledge in a small manifesto to be incorporated in the WFC Declaration;

- Participate in the Sustainable Wood for a Sustainable World communications campaign.

I would be keen on organizing a presentation to FFF partners to present the proposed plenary and the sustainable wood campaign in detail. Next week we will organize a teleconference with all confirmed partners.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Warm regards,

Thaís Linhares-Juvenal
