Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals. Although not very lethal in adult animals, it causes serious production losses and is a major constraint in international trade. The
FMD situation has improved markedly in recent years particularly in Europe and some countries in south east Asia and South America, but the disease remains endemic and at a high prevalence in many countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and South America.
Within the European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD), FAO works in close partnership with the European Commission DG-SANTE and the World Organization of Animal Health (OIE) to support and promote the global strategy for progressive
control of Foot-and-Mouth, though work with member countries on their preparedness, and with European neighbors putting in place sustainable control programmes. For more information have a look at the
EUFMD website.
