After decades of increasing human pressures on the Mediterranean and Black Sea marine ecosystems and fisheries resources, the latest data show
while most fish stocks remain overexploited, the number of stocks subject to overfishing has decreased for the first time in decades.
The State of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries 2020, developed by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) – a
FAO statutory body which operates under FAO Governing Bodies, provides the most comprehensive overview of regional and sub-regional fisheries trends currently available. It is an invaluable tool for understanding the dynamics of the sector, making strategic
decisions and monitoring their impacts.
This latest edition includes a wealth of new data on fishery resources and vulnerable species, the composition of the regional fleet, the contribution
of the sector to the blue economy, and the measures taken to preserve it.
The presentation of the report’s key findings, followed by a Q and A session, will be held virtually
on Monday, 14 December, at 11:00 (Rome time).
Interpretation will be provided in Arabic, English, French, and Spanish.
Journalists can participate in the event via Zoom
