*Global CA-CoP* *CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE* *for sustainable agriculture, land and ecosystem management* Dear Subscribers, Please see herebelow a self-explanatory message from Sandra Corsi and Hafiz Muminjanov of the Plant Production and Protection (NSP) Division of FAO regarding a 2-minute survey on semi-arid drylands. Apologies for any cross-posting. *Amir Kassam * *Moderator* *Global CA-CoP* e-mail: [log in to unmask] URL: http://www.fao.org/conservation-agriculture *Conservation Agriculture is an ecological approach to regenerative sustainable agriculture and ecosystem management based on the practical application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance (no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops); and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops).* *These practices are complemented with other good agricultural production and land management practices.* *Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all continents, involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual cropland systems, perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems, agroforestry systems, crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland systems, organic production systems and rice-based systems. Conservation Agriculture systems operate regeneratively at multiple levels to harness a range of productivity, economic, environmental and social benefits as well as address local and global concerns related to food and water security, climate change, land degradation, biodiversity and smallholder agricultural development.**Conservation Tillage, Reduced Tillage, Low tillage and Minimum Tillage are not Conservation Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own* (more at: http://www.fao.org/conservation-agriculture). ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Corsi, Sandra (NSP) <[log in to unmask]> Date: Tue, 1 Dec 2020 at 19:47 Subject: DRYLANDS semi-arid | SURVEY Dear all, Drylands are particularly challenging for agriculture and food production. In this regard, FAO would like to promote more broadly the agronomic practices effective for optimizing crop production in dryland agro-ecosystems. We are keen to hear your experience on an agroecosystem's approach to Conservation Agriculture / no-till systems and have developed short surveys, each one targeting one dryland subtype. We will launch them on a circa bimonthly basis. Our second survey on semi-arid drylands< https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSepLnSj6fKYII9NCaMWXvEQxXpEYjTmdI4Kxg5PsbLYgQPBrg/viewform> will explore adapted agronomic management solutions and options for the diversification of crop systems and will take approximately 2 minutes to complete. Your answers will be very valuable to us in prioritizing our work. The results will be made available at this website< http://www.fao.org/uploads/pics/Results_for_dry_subhumid_drylands__5_.pdf> and further discussed in a webinar organized in cooperation with FAO RNE, FAO NSP and the University of Cordoba. We also consider developing a publication and would like to acknowledge those who have shared their experience. So please make sure to indicate your name and contact details.
