Subject: 2021 Forest and Farm Facility Steering Committee and Donor Support Group meetings

Dear friends,

The new year is upon us; and we all hope and expect that it will be better than the last.

For many rural communities throughout the world, 2020 was devastating. In addition to the pandemic itself, they faced economic crises, difficulty accessing markets and services, and the growing effect of climate change. But in general, the better organized they were, the better they weathered the storm. Women leaders were key in that. In that context, the importance of programs like the Forest and Farm Facility, which help grassroot organization to address social hardship, climate change, and other key challenges was more evident than ever.

Normally, the Forest and Farm Facility Steering Committee holds a two-day annual in-person meeting in Rome at the end of February. Unfortunately, this year that will not be possible, at least not in the first semester. However, we do still need to have a (virtual) Steering Committee meeting in the first quarter of this year to report on our results, get feedback on our workplans, review the external mid-term evaluation currently finishing up, and get input about where we should go in the future.

Given the virtual format and time zone differences where everyone is located, it would not be possible to have full day meetings and we will have to compress the time. We therefore propose to have a three-day meeting and to meet for two or two and a half hours each day in the early afternoon Rome time. Since we really do want substantive feedback, the presentations will be limited, with condensed information, but we will still send you the full documentation. As in previous years, our resource partners are invited and encouraged to attend as observers. This virtual format will also allow our FFF country facilitators to observe the meetings as observers. We also plan to have a separate Donors Support Group meeting around the same time, hosted, as in previous years, by Sweden.

For the Steering Committee to be able to receive and react to the findings of the mid-term evaluation, we will have to hold the Steering Committee meeting in March this year, rather than late February. Below you will find a link to a Doodle Survey, which will help us to see what dates you would be available. Kindly respond to the Survey by next Wednesday January 13th. We need to get the final dates for the meetings in everyone’s calendar as soon as possible.

As the in-coming manager of the Forest and Farm Facility I feel extremely happy and honored to have the opportunity to work with each of you. Despite the complications of the pandemic, I have no doubt that we will have a highly successful Steering Committee meeting and am grateful for your willingness to adapt to these special circumstances.

With warm regards,

David
