Dear BIOPLANNERS,
I have been reading New Scientist for almost half a century and they have rarely featured biodiversity, so I was pleased to see it make the cover story of this week’s issue, and even more pleased to see that the special feature is free access.
Here are the URLs to the two articles., the first of which is heavily hyperlinked and serves as a useful overview of the evidence base for the negotiations towards CoP15 in China later this year.
Rescue plan for nature: How to fix the biodiversity crisis
Ten conservation success stories when species came back from the brink
This is the first in a series of five New Scientist features produced in association with the United Nations Environment Programme and UNEP partner agency GRID-Arendal. Part two of the series, on 6 March, will look at the part our abuse of nature played in unleashing the covid-19 pandemic and, hopefully, the whole series will be free access.
UNEP is currently hosting the pre-meeting consultations for the 5th UN Environment Assembly which will be covered by Earth Negotiations Bulletin and can be followed here.
Also, in this week’s Nature journal, long-time UNEP watcher, Maria Ivanova, has a short (free access) article which recommends that UNEP focus more on providing all UN agencies with the environmental information they need for transformative change across all sectors
Ivanova, Maria (2021) At 50, the UN Environment Programme must lead again. Nature; https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/d41586-021-00393-5 (free access)
Her book, “The Untold Story of the World's Leading Environmental Institution:
UNEP at Fifty” can be explored and ordered here.
Finally, a somewhat belatedly, here are the links to the World Economic Forum Global Risks 2021 report and cover story, which show infectious disease rising to top for risk by impact (biodiversity loss 4th) and pushing biodiversity loss down from 4th to 5th for risk likelihood.
I am still working my way through the Dasgupta Review and will try to summarise it for all here soon.
Best wishes
David Duthie
