World Water Day 2021

Virtual event, 22 March 2021, 13.00 – 14.30  (CET)

World Water Day is held on the 22 March every year, to celebrate this precious resource and raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the global acceleration of concrete actions to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on behalf of UN Water will mark World Water Day by hosting a virtual event on 22 March 2021 that will raise awareness on the true value of water and how we can better protect this vital resource.

FAO Director-General QU Dongyu will deliver a welcoming address for the high-level event. Additional  opening remarks will be made by Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, and Gilbert F. Houngbo, Chair, UN-Water and President of IFAD. The ceremony will also feature a special message from His Holiness Pope Francis, alongside speeches by other global High-Level speakers

The event will launch the UN World Water Development Report 2021, which gives an up-to-date overview of the current state of the world’s water. It describes the challenges and opportunities of improved water management in the context of sustainable development, including a chapter on water in Food and Agriculture written by experts from FAO.

This will be followed by an interactive discussion on the topic ‘What does water mean to you?’, a question that has been at the heart of the World Water Day 2021 campaign. The campaign asked people around the world to say how they value water and why water is so important in their lives. This is not just about the financial value of water e.g., the price people pay, the costs and the investments. This is about policy makers and experts listening to users of water to understand how they see its value and what actions users want prioritised.  Pedro Arrojo-Agudo, UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation will share his special reflections and the Stockholm World Water Prize winner will be announced.

The ceremony will be broadcast as a webcast and can also be followed on Zoom (register here).
