Before becoming manager of the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF), I worked on the report - Forest Governance by Indigenous and Tribal Peoples - recently published by FAO and the Fund for the Development of Indigenous Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean (FILAC). The FFF engages with organizations representing the rights and interests of indigenous peoples and local communities.

New report - Forest Governance by Indigenous and Tribal Peoples
[medium_1_EN-3D]Indigenous peoples and Afro-descendants in the forest areas of Latin America with generations of experience successfully protecting nature, have strong track records of guarding the forest, according to the report. They generally favor smaller-scale, more diverse farming, that does not involve extensive cattle ranching, and which extracts far less from the land than industrial operations do. But they are under constant threat from the effects of climate change as well as incursions by industries such as beef, soy, palm oil and fossil fuel production, as well as mining and logging. The pressures are growing at such a rate that indigenous peoples need more external assistance than they've needed in the past, so the report is also calling on the international community and governments to act and do specific things that we already know work. FFF's missions align with these recommendations and supports indigenous peoples' voice to be heart in policy processes.

International Day of Forests
David Kaimowitz explains why global ambition to restore the world's forests will only be achieved if the huge potential of forest and farm producers is realised.
[People in a forest looking at trees]
When Alfayo Mayemba went out on a hot sunny day and counted the trees on his farm in Kombi village in Tanzania, he probably wasn't thinking about saving the planet. He was thinking about whether he'll be getting better prices when he sells the wood, which is one way he earns his living.

Woodfuel production and trade in Zambia
[cid:image014.png@01D736BE.F45EAB10]
The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), FFF and other partners, undertake activities in Zambia to generate evidence, knowledge and options for more sustainable woodfuel value chains under the project entitled Governing Multifunctional Landscapes (GML) in sub-Saharan Africa, launched in 2018. This brief summarizes the key learnings from the biophysical and institutional assessments undertaken in Choma District. This overview of the state of the resource base and the institutional mechanisms in place, provides insights on options for the sustainable management of woodfuel value chains.
