We are pleased to be able to share with you an overview of the Programme of Work of GBEP for 2021. The table below sets out all completed, ongoing and planned GBEP activities, as well as giving information on relevant links and requested inputs from Partners and Observers.

 

We would like to specifically draw your attention to the upcoming GBEP Side Event at the 29th EUBCE on 29 April 2021 at 1615-1815 CEST, entitled “Biomass for landscape restoration: how can the bioeconomy contribute to the UN Decade on ecosystem restoration?”. The event, hosted by GBEP as part of the activities under AG4, is open access; you can register for the event here, selecting the ‘free’ option and then choosing the event from the list of free events. We invite you to share the event widely in your networks. The Concept note and agenda are available on the conference webpage and the GBEP website.

AG2

“Raising awareness, and sharing of data and experience on the implementation of the GBEP indicators”

A preliminary assessment of the biodiesel value chain in Paraguay is being undertaken in collaboration with FAO Paraguay and CEAMSO (Centro de Estudio Ambientales y Sociales, Paraguay), with a view to provide initial feedback on critical areas for further analysis and policy needs.

 

 

AG3

“Study Tour for capacity building and training”

 

The 8th GBEP Bioenergy Week was held online 16-18 March 2021 in partnership with FAO, AUC/AFREC and UNECA, and with the kind financial support of the USGC.

All relevant documents are available on the GBEP Website.

 

The 9th GBEP Bioenergy Week is due to take place in Paraguay in 2022. More details to follow in due time.

 

 

AG4

“Woody biomass for forest landscape restoration (FLR) and sustainable livelihoods”

The AG4 will hold a Side Event at the EUBCE on 29 April 2021 at 1615-1815 CEST, entitled “Biomass for landscape restoration: how can the bioeconomy contribute to the UN Decade on ecosystem restoration?”

“Biogas”

A webinar will be held on Thursday 27 May 2021 to discuss the results from the 2020 AG7 Stocktaking Report and to highlight further research that is being conducted in this area.

Concept note and draft agenda will be circulated in due time.

 

AG8

“Advanced Liquid Biofuels”

The “Collection of Experiences in Advanced Liquid Biofuels” Report will be finalized and published in September 2021 and an associated webinar will be held.

The questionnaire that provides the basis for the collection of examples is attached to this email.

Financing options for Bioenergy Projects and Programmes

The report “Financing options for Bioenergy Projects and Programmes” and the accompanying online search tool were updated in March 2021 as a kind contribution from FAO.

Both the report and the search tool are available on the GBEP Website.

 

Youth

GBEP Youth Award.

The GBEP Youth Award 2021 was awarded to Lilian Motongori Jamunga for her research on “Mechanically (pedal) driven village-level reactor for production of biodiesel from non-edible oils”. She presented her research and was awarded with a certificate during a special session at the 8th GBEP Bioenergy Week.

The GBEP Youth Award 2022 will be associated with the 9th GBEP Bioenergy Week to be held in Paraguay. The call for papers will be open in late 2021 to university students studying in research institutions in the Americas.

The GBEP Secretariat, with inputs from FAO, has finalized the first draft of the Bioenergy Supplement for the YUNGA Energy Challenge Badge and it is currently being piloted by youth groups globally.

World Food Forum, October 2021.

The GBEP Secretariat will be contributing to the Education Track of the WFF, with a ‘lab’ for young people dedicated to bioenergy and its links with agri-food systems.

Seminar on “Sustainable bioenergy in national and international contexts”

The GBEP Secretariat will be presenting a seminar organized by the Polytechnic University of Turin, Department of Energy, in the context of the University courses on Energy Economics.

IEA Bioenergy Strategic Inter-Task Project on Bioenergy in a WB2/SDG World

2nd Workshop, 15-16 June 2021

The GBEP Secretariat will be contributing to this workshop, entitled “How can biomass supply for bioenergy deliver multiple benefits and contribute to sustainable development goals?”

 

 

Webinar in collaboration with LEDSLAC, Tuesday 22 June 2021, 1700-1800 CEST

The GBEP Secretariat will be contributing to one webinar in a series hosted by LEDSLAC Community of Practice on Bioenergy (BioE-CoP), presenting the experiences of the measurement of the GSI in Paraguay.

Rapid Implementation Framework

Development is underway of the project proposal for the Rapid Implementation Framework.

Data entry sheets

The data entry sheets are a tool to streamline indicator measurement and ensure data consistency across the set of GBEP indicators.

The first draft of the data entry sheets for the measurement of the GSI for bioenergy pathways from agricultural crops have been completed and approved by P&Os.

Bioeconomy

The GBEP Secretariat contributed to the joint GBEP and IEA Bioenergy working paper “Sustainability Governance of Bioenergy and the Bioeconomy”.
