Release of the 2021 Global Report on Food Crises and high-level launch event

5 May 2021

On 5 May 2021, the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC) – an international alliance working to address the root causes of extreme hunger – will release the 2021 edition of the Global Report on Food Crises, an annual report issued since 2017.

The Report will reveal the latest number of people experiencing acute food insecurity and malnutrition in countries beset by food crises; the worst food crises of 2020, providing regional- and country-level overviews; an analysis of the drivers that contributed to food crises in 2020, including how the COVID-19 pandemic has compounded pre-existing drivers and pushed up levels of extreme hunger.

The release of the Report comes amid mounting famine concern without urgent humanitarian anticipatory action.

The report will go live on 5 May 2021, at 10.00 Rome time, here.

High-level launch event

Beginning at 14.30 Rome time on 5 May a high-level launch event will bring together leading humanitarian and development actors to discuss the findings of the Global Report on Food Crises and chart a collective response to the acute hunger situation the world today confronts.

The event will be moderated by David Nabarro, Special Envoy on COVID-19 for the World Health Organization and Strategic Advisor for the Food Systems Summit Dialogues.

Speakers include:

  • QU Dongyu, Director-General, FAO
  • Janez Lenarčič, European Commissioner for Crisis Management
  • Maximo Torero, Chief Economist, FAO
  • Agnes Kalibata, Special Envoy for the 2021 Food Systems Summit

The position paper/statement will go live on 5 May 2021, at 10.00 Rome time, here.

About the Global Network and Global Report

Launched by the European Union, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) in 2016, the Global Network against food crises seeks to better link, integrate, and guide existing initiatives, partnerships, programmes and policy processes to sustainable address the root causes of crises.

The Global Report on Food Crises is the flagship publication of the Global Network and is facilitated by the Food Security Information Network (FSIN). The Report is the result of a consensus-based and multi-partner analytical process involving 16 international humanitarian and development partners (full list here).

Experts at FAO and other Global Network against Food Crises partner organizations will be available for interviews.
