International Year of Plant Health wraps up – events and launch of scientific review on climate change’s impacts on plant pests

1 June - 1 July 2021

Join FAO and partners for a series of events as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) comes to an end.

The Year has been an opportunity to raise awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment, and boost economic development. The United Nations declared 2020 as the IYPH. The Year was extended until 1 July 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Launch of a scientific review of the impact of climate change on plant pests

1 June 2021, 14.00-16.00h, Rome time

Launched by FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and representatives of agriculture/forestry ministries from Finland and Zambia (full list of speakers here), the review by University of Turin Professor Maria Lodovica (Italy) and ten FAO experts from around the world was prepared under the auspices of the Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

The review explores how climate change impacts plant pests and diseases (including Fall armyworm, Desert locust, Banana Fusarium wilt, Potato late blight); and puts forward recommendations to prevent and mitigate plant pest risks in agriculture, forestry and ecosystems. It also contributes to enhancing science-based discussions on how to assess and manage the impact of climate change on plant health.
