One in every five fish caught around the world every year is thought to originate from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU).
IUU fishing impacts fishers and fish workers, the sustainability of fisheries and marine ecosystems and consumers.
The 2009 FAO Agreement on Port State Measures is the first binding international
agreement designed to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing by stopping foreign vessels engaging in it from using ports, landing their catches, or denying them entry.
From 31 May to 4 June, the European Union will host virtually
the Third Meeting of the Parties of the 2009
FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA).
FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, and the European Union’s Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries,
Virginijus Sinkevičius. will address a High-Level Event to be held on 31 May at 9:00 (CEST), the first day of the meeting.
FAO experts will also be available for media interviews.
FAO will also hold a
digital talk on Friday 4 June 2021 (15:00 CEST), to mark
the International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing.
