Launch of the Global Assessment of Soil Pollution report
FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, and UNEP Executive Director, Inger Andersen, to launch report – 4 June 2021,
12:30 (CEST)
|
|
Soil pollution may be invisible to the human eye but it compromises the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe.
Contaminants enter the soil, then move to air and water and enter our agri-food systems, harming our environment and our health.
The Global Assessment of Soil Pollution report and its Summary for Policy makers will be officially launched on 4 June at 12:30 (CEST) as part of
World Environment Day celebrations and the launch of the recently declared
UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).
FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, and the Executive-Director of the UN Environment Programme,
Inger Andersen, will launch the report. Opening Remarks will be made by
H.E. David Choquehuanca, Vice-president of the Plurinational State of Bolivia.
Soil pollution is a global transboundary problem
and hampers
the
achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It requires a joint and coordinated response.
The Global Assessment will make a valuable contribution to raising awareness of the threats posed by soil pollution and be critical to the success of the
UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the upcoming
Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and
the One Health approach.
