Projections of soil loss by water erosion in Europe by 2050 Soil loss by water erosion is projected to increase by 13–22.5% in the EU and UK by 2050, mainly due to increased rainfall intensity. This soil loss is expected to be greatest in central and northern Europe, which could see losses of up to 100% in some areas. Soil erosion in southern Europe is projected to be largely unchanged due to a decline in precipitation patterns. Authors used 19 Global Climate Models and three different Representative Concentration Pathways - RCP2.6, 4.5, 8.5) to project soil loss by water erosion in Europe by 2050. They also simulated the crop dynamics and land use changes with CAPRI model. More details in a JRC-led article. Data available here: https://esdac.jrc.ec.europa.eu/content/water-erosion-europe-2050 |

EU Soil Observatory Stakeholders Forum: 19-21 October 2021 The JRC is organising the first ever European Soil Observatory (EUSO) Stakeholders Forum. This three-day event (built on six, focused, half-day sessions) will reflect the challenges facing soil within the various strategies of the Green Deal (e.g. the Soil, Biodiversity and Farm2Fork strategies, Zero Pollution Action Plan) and Horizon Europe’s proposed Mission on Soil Health and Food. The meeting will also establish a series of dedicated Working Groups to address scientific and policy questions (e.g. soil monitoring, citizen engagement and increased soil literacy, soil pollution, erosion and biodiversity). Participants will be encouraged to engage in discussions. Agenda is available. Registration is open: https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/event/other-event/euso-stakeholders-forum |

First Young Soil Researchers Forum: 21 October 2021
During the EUSO Stakeholders Forum, we plan a 2.5-hours meeting with parallel sessions (up to six) targeting specific
themes with 10 presentations. All aspects of soil research are welcome (soil biodiversity, erosion, pollution, nutrients, urban soils, compaction, etc.).

Soil and climate - Can earthworms really mitigate climate change? 29 September 2021 Through this ‘Ask a Scientist’ side event of the pre-COP26 All4Climate - Italy 2021 initiative, JRC scientists will highlight the critical relationships between soil and climate - showing how the science behind soil can affect climate change - and describe the EU’s efforts to raise awareness of the value of soil and reduce the pressures on life within it, which threaten their capacity to regulate climate. https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/event/webinar/soil-and-climate |

Workshop at REMTECH: From policy talking to industry actions Zero pollution to soil (20 September 2021) The objective of this workshop is to openly discuss and to solicit a call for contributions: do we have a good understanding of a problem (distribution), do we have solutions now, cost-benefit analysis, pollutant-by-pollutant basis (watch-list), how about a monitoring program? How about new digital technologies? The workshop will include discussions with policy makers, industry and other stakeholders. Free registration by 17.9.2021 at https://remtech.meeters.space/ |
