To: [log in to unmask] <[log in to unmask]>

Dear Partners and Members of the “4 per 1000” Initiative,

Please find hereafter the mail we have received from the Action Track 3 leaders (Professor Rattan LAL, Kelly WITKOWSKI and Leigh Ann WINOWIECKI) in the context of the preparation of the United Nation Food Systems Summit which will take place next week on September 23sr in New York and online.

One of the expected results of the summit will be the constitution of coalitions gathering all categories of stake-holders in support of a or some important topics.

The Action Track leaders propose our “4 per 1000” Initiative which was involved in the discussion from the beginning to be part of a coalition called “Coalition of Action for Soil Health: The Global Soil Hub as part of the UNFSS”.

You will find the presentation documents (slides and paper) attached.

The “4 per 1000” Initiative will be part of this coalition due to the proximity of all subjects addressed by the coalition and by the Initiative since its inception.

The purpose of this message is to propose to all our partners, and the countries in the first raw, to join the coalition and address a letter of support to the coalition. This is an important and very urgent matter, so please send you letter of support before the September 19th, 2021.

You will find here attached also a template for a letter of support that we encourage you to send to Leigh Ann Winowiecki: [log in to unmask], as indicated in the template.

Thank you very much for your support in that important issue, and we hope to see you during the COP 26 of UNFCCC in Glasgow or virtually on November 10th, 2021, for our 5th “4 per 1000” initiative Day.

Best regards

Objet : UNFSS - Letter of Support from 4p1000 Global Soil Hub

Dear Paul

The Action Tracks were very pleased to note the participation of the France in the UN FSS Pre-Summit last month.

We are pleased to share exciting progress and momentum on the Coalition of Action for Soil Health: The Global Soil Hub as part of the UNFSS.

As you are most likely aware, during the closing ceremony of the pre-summit, a number of emerging coalitions were presented by the Deputy Secretary-General. We were happy to see interesting topics named. At the same time we realize there is still a major gap: a Coalition of Action for Soil Health for food system transformation. Based on earlier conversations we have had with you, as well as your statements during the pre-summit, we believe this coalition might be of interest to you and we are looking for your support.

As part of Action Track 3, the Coalition of Action for Soil Health, formed the Global Soil Hub Solution Cluster, which has an active working group representing organizations such as the UNCCD, FAO Global Soil Partnership, RySS in India, SUA in Tanzania, IICA, 4p1000, WBCSD, World Soil Information, farmers organizations, among many others as well as active member state engagement from USA, Canada, Finland and Germany.

As next steps, we are eager to raise the profile of soil health during the UNFSS and beyond. Therefore, if member states and institutes are interested in submitting a letter of support to the UNFSS Secretariat, this would be a welcome action.

We have compiled an information packet on the Coalition of Action for Soil Health:

  1. Attached is the updated call to action
  2. Also attached is the presentation we shared with Member States during the information sessions
  3. Here is the Private Sector Guiding Group Call to Action online:  https://croplife.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2021_IFA_PSGG_Coalition_for_Soil_Health_Call_to_Action.pdf
  4. Letter of support template attached

Due to the urgency - only 10 days ahead of the UN Food Systems summit, a supportive letter to the Special Envoy Kalibata from your institution would help strengthen our ask for a  Coalition of Action for Soil Health to be presented at the Summit in N.Y. We have drafted the attached template to support you in this process, if helpful.

We look forward to your feedback and working with your team to bring together organizations interested in scaling investments in soil health. For further questions and discussions, we are also open to meet bilaterally.

Sincerely,

Leigh, Rattan, and Kelly
