Special Edition - World Food Forum Masterclass to Feature Young Foodtech Innovators from Japan

Thursday, September 9, 2021 / 16:00-19:30 (JST) / 7:00-10:30 (CET)

The masterclass is a live, interactive broadcast on Zoom

The World Food Forum (WFF) - organized in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Japanese business and innovation investment consulting firm SIGMAXYZ - will host a special edition Foodtech Venture Day Masterclass on the topic of ‘Recreating and Upgrading Food Systems through Collective Passion and Wisdom.’

The masterclass will showcase a range of Japanese start-ups which are spearheading food innovation, as well as advanced technologies and game-changing solutions to help achieve sustainable, resilient, and inclusive food systems.

Designed to engage young people and empower youth from Japan to help transform global agri-food systems, the masterclass will promote dialogue among scientists, researchers, start-ups, students, UN experts and investors – as well as bring agri-industry perspectives into the upcoming WFF2021 flagship event and the Nutrition for Growth Summit in Tokyo (December 2021).

FAO Deputy Director General, Beth Bechdol, will deliver an opening keynote speech on the importance of private-sector strategies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The masterclass will be broadcast live on Zoom webcast on Thursday, September 9 at 16:00 (JST) and 7:00 (CET) in Japanese and English.

Featured Japanese startups in the masterclass will include Euglena, a company solving nutritional challenges with algae; Fermentations, a circular economy producer of ethanol products from grain and fruit waste; Delisfter, a producer of food items for the ageing population; and IntegriCulture a cell culture startup.

This masterclass is a pre-event to WFF2021, which will be held online from 1 - 5 October, and has four themes: ‘Better Production,’ ‘Better Nutrition,’ ‘Better Life,’ and ‘Better Environment.’

Looking at the entire value chain from food production to the dining table, WFF2021 aims to form a community of youth leaders, startups, and private sector partners, NPOs, academia, and public institutions that can contribute to each area.
