FAO Director-General to address Global Conference on Aquaculture Millenium+20



Hybrid event expected to adopt Shanghai Declaration to guide future development





Aquaculture is the world’s fastest growing agri-food sector and considered a vital source for feeding the planet’s expanding population in the future.


This week the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) together with China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) is holding the Global Conference on Aquaculture Millenium+20 in Shanghai, in the People’s Republic of China.


FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, will address the opening session of the conference on Thursday, 23 September 2021 at 17.00 Shanghai (11.00 Rome CEST).

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, of the Kingdom of Thailand and a FAO Special Ambassador for Zero Hunger, will be Guest of Honour at the two-day hybrid event, which will feature in person and virtual attendance by representatives from the private and public sectors, academia and civil society.



The theme of the conference is "Aquaculture for Food and Sustainable Development”.



The Shanghai Declaration<https://aquaculture2020.org/declaration/>, expected to be adopted at the conference, will shape the future of aquaculture and seek to optimize its contribution to global agri-food systems in line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
