Conservation Agriculture (CA) is an ecological approach to regenerative sustainable agriculture and ecosystem management based on the practical application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance (no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops); and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops). These practices are complemented with other complementary good agricultural production and land management practices to generate and sustain optimum performance.
The Oregon Department of Agriculture is seeking to hire a Soil Health Specialist for a full-time, limited duration-time position until June 30, 2023, located in Salem, Oregon.
This position works to incorporate soil health into Oregon Department of Agriculture programs and also collaborates with a variety of other agencies and partners to promote soil health. The position supports outcomes that reduce erosion, enhance nutrient use efficiency, promote carbon sequestration on natural and working lands, and help the agriculture industry adapt to climate change. The Soil Health Specialist will collaborate with state and federal agencies to implement voluntary natural and working lands strategies recommended by the Oregon Global Warming Commission and state leaders. In addition, they will connect farmers with local sources of technical assistance to implement on-the-ground practices that benefit soil health, including local SWCDs, Extension Service, and NRCS.
