To the members of the Mountain Partnership and all friends of mountains, The year 2021 was a year of expansion, joint initiatives and exciting new alliances. Members worked together across the
world to show why Mountains Matter for our planet, regardless of the pandemic. The Mountain Partnerships continued to be active and present in international fora placing mountain issues
on international agendas. We hosted an independent dialogue,
a Pre-Summit parallel session and
produced an information sheet for
the UN Food Systems Summit 2021; organized a side event at the High-level
Political Forum; and conducted two side
events at the UN COP26 Climate Change Conference. Youth
was at the centre of a COP26 satellite event and
the launch of “Mountains:
the water towers of our world – Children’s call to action to protect mountain areas against the impacts of climate change”. The 14th IPROMO
course focused on post-COVID-19 recovery in mountain areas, while the first ever Spanish-language
IPROMO jointly organized with CONDESAN highlighted the sustainable management of socio-ecosystems in the Andes.
Meanwhile, the 4th annual
GROW Summer School examined agrobiodiversity in a changing climate. The Italy-funded Mountain Partnership Products (MPP) initiative promoted a collaboration between ethical fashion
designer Stella Jean and women
artisans in Kyrgyzstan to develop a collection for Milan Fashion week – but more importantly, to help boost the mountain women’s income. A project with NaturaSì, Ecobubble, Sapienza University-Botanical Gardens of Rome and Slow Food united technology,
sustainable agri-food systems and the conservation of agrobiodiversity by launching the rooftop
garden on the terrace of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s headquarters in Rome. Expo 2020 Dubai saw mountains spotlighted during a day-long
event co-curated by Italy, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat and the Aga Khan Development Network.
We were honoured to have our MPP initiative selected to be part of Expo’s Global
Best Practices Programme. The Mountain Partnership Secretariat released a number of publications in 2021, including its 2020
Annual Report, the publication Mountain
farming systems – Seeds for the future on mountain agroecology, an information
sheet on mountains and the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, and two Mountain Research and Development journal articles – “Promoting
Mountain Biodiversity Through Sustainable Value Chains” and “FAO's
Work in Mountains: Building the Road to Recovery for Mountain Peoples”. The International Mountain Day (IMD) online
event saw the launch of Mountain
tourism - Towards a more sustainable path, a joint publication by FAO, the World Tourism Organization and the Mountain Partnership Secretariat.
A multilingual IMD communication campaign on sustainable mountain tourism included posters,
a photo contest, an editorial, op-ed and
a press release.
Social media featured a dedicated Instagram and Facebook mountain filter and
two FAO TikToks! About 80 events in 32 countries around the world took place to celebrate the IMD 2021 –
read more here. We are proud to announce two new Mountain Partnership Goodwill
Ambassadors: fashion designer Stella Jean, and Tajik mountain youth volunteer Dilshodbegim Khusravova.
We wish them a big welcome in the Mountain Partnership family! And to finish the year with a bang, we are delighted to announce that the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed
2022 the International Year for Sustainable Mountain Development
at the proposal of the Kyrgyz Government. This
resolution
was sponsored by 94 governments and invites the Mountain Partnership to facilitate the observance of this Year. We look forward to working together in 2022 with all 441 MP members to build on this opportunity to galvanize
action for mountains and mountain people! Happy New Year, Bonne année, Feliz año nuevo, Felice anno nuovo! The Mountain Partnership Secretariat
