Compared to the assessment for 2010, we estimate a very small decrease of soil loss by water erosion (<1%) due to a limited increase of applied soil conservation practices and land cover change observed at the EU level. The modelling results suggest that, currently, ca. 25% of the EU land has erosion rates higher than the recommended sustainable threshold (2 t ha−1 yr−1 ) and more than 6% of agricultural lands suffer from severe erosion (11 t ha−1 yr−1 ). The results are documented with relevant publication <https://www.mdpi.com/2072-4292/12/9/1365/htm>. These new data (as a raster file) are available from: https://esdac.jrc.ec.europa.eu/content/soil-erosion-water-rusle2015 Update of Cover Management <https://esdac.jrc.ec.europa.eu/content/cover-management-factor-c-factor-eu> (C-factor) for year 2016 The elaboration of the EU Farm Structure Survey data for 2016 and CORINE Land Cover2012 in the GIS-based LANDUM model allowed to update the knowledge about the most recent changes in land use and arable land management. Using the data on tillage, plant residues and cover crops, we updated the Cover-management (C-factor) in EU for 2016. The increase of land under soil conservation practices and the land cover change have contributed to decreasing the mean C-factor by –0.8%. You can download the presentations of the Working Groups (WG) <https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/page/presentations-1st-euso-stakeholders-forum-189661> on Soil Pollution, Soil biodiversity, Soil Erosion and Data Integration. The WG on Soil Pollution and the WG on Soil erosion already had their kick off meetings at the end of 2021 while the rest of the WGs will meet early 2022. We also make available the presentations of the 1st Young Soil Researchers Forum <https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/euso/euso-stakeholders-forum/first-euso-stakeholders-forum-young-soil-researchers-forum> Soil, a burst of life <https://academy.europa.eu/courses/soil-a-burst-of-life-the-hidden-world-beneath-our-feet>* : the hidden world beneath our feet* The JRC Soil Team developed a new online course on soil biodiversity, available on the EU academy platform. It aims at raising awareness and increasing knowledge of the secret life beneath our feet. It also allows you to familiarise with European Union initiatives for soil (biodiversity) protection. The target audience is science teachers, high school students and the general public. https://academy.europa.eu/courses/soil-a-burst-of-life-the-hidden-world-beneath-our-feet Soil Mission—HORIZON calls <https://rea.ec.europa.eu/funding-and-grants/horizon-europe-cluster-6-food-bioeconomy-natural-resources-agriculture-and-environment/soil-mission_en>* and call for experts* Under Horizon Europe, the European Commission funds research and innovation in order to protect and restore soils in Europe and beyond. This funding is in line with the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe”. *Eight topics are open*, including Soil advisors; Linking soil health to nutritional and safe food; Incentives and business models; Engage with authorities to protect soil. *Total Budget* is 62 Mln Euro. *Deadline for applications*: 24 March 2022. In addition, the EU Commission looks for 75 top experts (15 for Soil Mission) to advise on EU Missions (deadline: 2.2.2022): Call for experts <https://ec.europa.eu/info/news/commission-looking-top-experts-advise-eu-missions-2022-jan-05_en> . https://rea.ec.europa.eu/funding-and-grants/horizon-europe-cluster-6-food-bioeconomy-natural-resources-agriculture-and-environment/soil-mission_en *More Details* *Download the ESDAC Newsletter*: PDF Format <http://esdac.jrc.ec.europa.eu/public_path/newsletter/202201.pdf>. *Feedback*: [log in to unmask] ESDAC Alerts are e-mailed to 12,000 scientists.
