Dear Rebecca,

I think you need to be a bit more precise in your request for information in order to get an answer, you can use. Specify your needs.

To my knowledge, there is no other standardised systems available than the FoodCASE system.

In the Eurofoods/EuroFIR projects, we defined a draft standard for food composition data management.

You can find the documents online. I have made a special page for this my Compilers’ Toolbox™ (http://toolbox.foodcomp.info/):

http://toolbox.foodcomp.info/ToolBox_DataInterchange.asp

FAO/INFOODS (https://www.fao.org/infoods/) has developed an Excel spreadsheet, which may serve some purposes in the initial data compilation process. You can find it on the FAO/INFOODS website:

https://www.fao.org/infoods/infoods/software-tools/en/

where it is listed together with FoodCASE as the only food composition data management tools.

It is my impression that most of the food composition data management systems used are built by compilers/organisations to serve their own specific purpose(s) – often in connection with systems serving food consumption surveys or laboratory information systems.

FoodCASE (or its predecessor) was originally developed to serve the Swiss food composition databank’s purposes, but as a development project expanded to serve the needs of the compilers in European countries in need of their own data management system.

Therefore, in Europe you will see many different national systems in addition to the group using the FoodCASE system. Since the development of FoodCASE during the original EuroFIR projects, FoodCASE is still maintained under the umbrella of the EuroFIR AISBL members.

In the Nordic countries, I think that only Norway uses FoodCASE, because our Norwegian colleagues needed a replacement for an old spreadsheet based data collection software – they may correct me, if I am wrong.

Many, many years ago, I built and programmed the Danish system, which has later been replaced by other in-house systems for the data management.

Similarly, in other countries in the world the systems are very diverse – ranging from simple spreadsheets to sophisticated data management systems, built specific in-house purposes – and not for other users. Usually the commercial potential is too small to make a business out of it.

I hope that colleagues around the world can update us with newer updated information.

Kind regards,

Anders

Subject: Help needed to find an optimization program?

We are looking for an alternative tool for optimization for nutrient composition of food products. . We are familiar with Foodcase, but want to look at other options also.

Any help and guidance would be appreciated.
