Glucose-induced priming effects in soils across Europe This new ESDAC dataset includes a quantification and comparison of glucose-induced priming effects in soils with contrasting land uses and under different crop types. On average, priming effects (PEs) were negative in semi-natural and cropland soils, meaning that microbial communities preferentially switched from soil organic C (SOC) decomposition to glucose mineralization. The data were obtained from samples of LUCAS 2018. In the publication, it was concluded that PEs were driven by soil basal respiration, microbial biomass C, and SOC. Data available. https://esdac.jrc.ec.europa.eu/content/priming-effects-soils-across-europe |

We integrated a soil erosion module in LUCAS 2018 Topsoils survey for the EU and UK. The 2018 LUCAS Topsoil Survey consisted of soil sampling (0–20 cm depth) and erosion observations conducted in 24,759 field survey sites. Gully erosion channels were detected for ca. 1% (211 sites) of the visited sites. The results presented in the publication indicate that LUCAS visual assessment is effective to map permanent gullies, whereas it appears less effective to detect short-lived forms like ephemeral gullies. The dataset includes the points with gully erosion channels and selected pictures. https://esdac.jrc.ec.europa.eu/content/gully-erosion-based-lucas |

Joint PhD of JRC with Aarhus University “Strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural soils in Europe” (deadline for applications 15.3.2022). The PhD candidate will integrate field studies outputs with large-scale process modelling to reach sound recommendations about GHG mitigation practices in agricultural soils at regional scale. The outcomes will contribute to the knowledge base being developed by the JRC’s EU Soil Observatory and relevant policy areas addressing soil health and climate change. Workshop on “Soil erosion for Europe – Emerging challenges” 20-22 June 2022 The European Soil Observatory Working Group on Soil Erosion organises a 3-days workshop “Workshop on soil erosion for Europe – Emerging challenges”, on 20-22 June 2022. This is a call for presentations at this workshop. If you are interested to present your work relevant to the proposed sessions, please send your proposal with a tentative title (and 5-10 lines of abstract) to one of the nine Session Chairs (mentioned in the flyer). Based on the number of proposals, sessions may be merged, extended or changed. The event will be online (Webex). Below is the flyer: https://esdac.jrc.ec.europa.eu/public_path/EUSO/2022%20June%20Workshop.pdf |

Soil health: contribute to call for evidence ahead of new proposal The Commission has launched a call for evidence to gather views on the upcoming possible legal provisions mentioned in the EU Soil Strategy for 2030 and relevant alternative options. This call for evidence is open for your feedback until 16 March 2022. Your input will be taken into account as the Commission further develops and fine tunes this initiative. |
