Highlights from the 2021 Annual Report

The Forest and farm Facility (FFF) is now about halfway through its second phase. As documented in the FFF 2021 annual report<https://pubs.iied.org/20836g>, its impact is scaling up. The increasing visibility and influence of smallholders and Indigenous Peoples can largely be attributed to the hard work and engagement of forest and farm organizations and their members, supported by the FFF and other like-minded bodies. Together, we are showing the power of these vibrant communities and what their actions on behalf of their members can deliver.

Increased recognition of the role of Indigenous Peoples
[cid:image003.jpg@01D83E30.24E1A6B0]The FFF was especially successful in 2021 in supporting the efforts of Indigenous Peoples and local communities to influence global climate and conservation discussions and funding. This contributed to the historic pledge of USD 1.7 billion made during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)'s COP26 to support tenure rights for, and forest management by, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and the adoption by the IUCN World Conservation Congress of a resolution submitted by FFF partner the Indigenous Peoples Coordinating Body of the Amazon Basin (COICA) calling for the protection of 80 percent of the Amazon by 2025.

Improved subnational or national policies in favour of grassroots organizations
[cid:image007.jpg@01D83E30.24E1A6B0]The FFF is helping producer organizations engage more effectively with governments at the level of municipalities, districts, provinces, departments and traditional authorities to ensure that grassroots voices and needs are better reflected in policies. In 2021, we helped strengthen or launch 83 policies, processes and decisions in favour of smallholder organizations. As a result, some governments are increasingly providing land, funding and physical infrastructure for producer organizations and helping them obtain access to capital; supporting COVID-19 response efforts; building roads to enable farmers to get their products to markets; and purchasing seedlings and other products from local cooperatives.

Built sustainable and climate-resilient community enterprises
[cid:image015.png@01D83E30.24E1A6B0]Forest and farm producer organizations are helping their members increase their incomes and resilience and access social protection programmes. In 2021, 89 organizations that we support developed business plans with credible financial information. More than 100 organizations implemented climate-resilience plans and practices. About 50 producer organizations provided or improved access for members to services such as health, education and income support, benefiting about 56 500 producers.

Influenced large scale development initiative
[cid:image016.jpg@01D83E30.24E1A6B0]Forest and farm smallholders are great innovators. When their good ideas succeed, they can often attract additional investment. Large projects and programmes are being put in place that build directly on the FFF's approach to work directly with smallholder organizations - for example, the Global Environment Facility is increasingly using FFF learnings and expertise in its project designs. Our influence on the development and implementation of large-scale development initiatives involving smallholders scaled up - with a total value of nearly USD 1.2 billion.

Addressed gender equity
[cid:image018.jpg@01D83E30.24E1A6B0]In 2021, we worked with 90 groups led by women and with 64 groups in which the majority of members were women (including many that were both), and they made important progress in the area of advocacy. Some groups also improved their production of honey and medicinal plants. In order to better understand our impacts on women producers and to improve our work in addressing their needs and challenges, we designed a stronger gender monitoring system.

Catalyzed a positive change
We believe strongly in our work and its capacity to catalyze widespread positive change. We are supporting forest and farm producer organizations in their efforts to stimulate entrepreneurship and increase access to markets, finance and services; helping build resilience among smallholders and in landscapes; encouraging gender-equitable approaches and outcomes; coordinating the efforts of representative organizations globally as a means for achieving rapid widespread policy improvements; and linking with donors and other funders to place forest and farm smallholders at the centre of projects and programmes.

Buoyed by the successes achieved in 2021 and determined to continue enlarging our impact,
we are pressing ahead in 2022.

A new market for agroecology products was recently launched in Sokodé with the local network of young producers REJEPPAT. In the last three years, young farmers of the region have been trained in agroecology practices and are now ready to offer quality products to sell to their community.
