On March 21, 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with
the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) and
the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences,
will jointly present a high level ceremony to celebrate the International Day of Forests.
The theme for the 2022 edition of the Day is "Forests and Sustainable Production and Consumption."
Today, the world faces unprecedented challenges, with climate change being one of the most alarming. These challenges threaten the well-being
of people and nature and require innovative solutions that put the world on a path to peace and prosperity on a healthy planet.
The ceremony will feature a panel of leading experts who will discuss how forest-based innovations, resource efficiency, forest-based products,
and ecosystem services can contribute to sustainable lifestyles and accelerate a shift toward more sustainable consumption and production. These efforts help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
health, well-being, and the transition to green and low-carbon economies.
FAO will also release a new report, Forest Products in the global bioeconomy: Enabling substitution by wood-based products and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals, which explains how switching
from fossil-based products to wood-based products can help combat climate change and achieve SDGs.
