Understanding Antimicrobial Resistance in food and agriculture

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major One Health global threat of increasing concern to human, animal health and environment. It also has implications for food safety, food security and the economic wellbeing of millions of farming households.

This course covers an overview of AMR in the food and agriculture sectors and its impact on agrifood systems. The audience will also learn about the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contribution to tackling AMR in those sectors.

In collaboration with the FAO Reference Centre for AMR in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, FAO developed this course. In addition, the FAO Reference Centres for AMR in Denmark, Mexico, Senegal, Thailand, France, and the United States of America contributed to the development of the course by providing technical review.

Today, a new free online training is made available to help you understand AMR in food and agriculture, as well as FAO's work on AMR and with its global partners.
After completing this training, you will understand:

* General principles of the emergence and spread of AMR in agrifood systems.

* Relevance and the impacts of AMR in food and agriculture sectors.

* Potential role of governments, farmers, animal health professionals, industry, and other key stakeholders in AMR mitigation.

* The role and current initiatives of FAO in tackling AMR in line with the FAO Action Plan on AMR 2021-2025<https://doi.org/10.4060/cb5545en>.
