Dear BIOPLANNERS,

Tomorrow and the day after, delegates will assemble in Stockholm, Sweden for the Stockholm+50 international environmental meeting, marking 50 years since the inaugural 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment.

The documents or the original meeting can be accessed at https://www.un.org/en/conferences/environment/stockholm1972

and a remarkable 27 minute video documentary of the conference can be accessed here: https://youtu.be/jKaYPk5YnsU (listen to the American Indian warning at 21 minutes in) which I found embedded in this cover story - https://theconversation.com/50-years-of-un-environmental-diplomacy-whats-worked-and-the-trends-ahead-182207.

Coinciding with the meeting, the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), in collaboration with the (Indian) Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) have produced a clear and punchy report on what is needed to ensure that Stockholm+100 will be a celebratory event.  The report is accompanied by a second report produced by global youth and their separate meeting in Stockholm is ongoing as I type.

Here are the metadata for the two reports…..

Stockholm+50: Unlocking a Better Future

SEI, CEEW

Scientific research offers evidence and guidance on how to progress on critical challenges, build better societies and protect our planet. This report was written to provide a scientific basis for the UN international meeting ‘Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity’, held in Stockholm on 2–3 June 2022. It is intended to stimulate an informed debate on why change towards a sustainable future is not happening at pace with the challenges humans and the planet face, and guide leaders to actions they can take now, informed by relevant science.

Charting a youth vision for a just and sustainable future

The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), Dhruvak Aggarwal, Nhilce Esquivel, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Robin Hocquet, Kristiina Martin, Carol Mungo, Anisha Nazareth, Jaee Nikam, Javan Odenyo, Bhuvan Ravindran, L S Kurinji, Zoha Shawoo, Kohei Yamada

This report is a companion to the independent scientific report Stockholm+50: Unlocking a Better Future (SEI & CEEW, 2022) prepared ahead of the UN international meeting ‘Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity’. The report is meant to capture the perspectives of youth, authored by a group of early-career researchers at Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW).

Finally, in 1972 I was just going up to college, to study environmental biology, but my attention was, at the time, focused on David Bowie, so was intrigued to find this link to my past -

Best wishes
