Guidelines for African swine fever (ASF) prevention and control in
smallholder pig farming in Asia

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly fatal infectious disease in domestic and wild pigs of all breeds and ages. Although the virus does not infect humans, it has significant implications for food security and farmer livelihoods. At least 60 percent of the global pig production is concentrated in east and southeast Asia, with the majority of pigs kept in low biosecurity smallholder farms with minimal resilience to disease incursion. As the disease becomes endemic to the region and expands into new areas, preparedness and control activities need to be constantly adjusted to situations observed in the field. A dynamic approach is required as the disease situation may be contrary to expectations based on the international standards or experiences from other parts of the world.

In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) at the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) recently collaborated with epidemiologists at the City University of Hong Kong to develop a series of guidelines to support smallholders. The documents provide technical guidance for ASF control that are practical, especially for smallholder pig farmers in the context of Asia.

The newly published guidelines have been presented in four volumes and can be utilized by veterinary authorities and frontline animal health workers to respond to ASF in smallholder settings.
The volumes include: 1) monitoring and surveillance of ASF; 2) culling and disposal of pigs in an ASF outbreak; 3) farm biosecurity, slaughtering and restocking; and 4) clean chain approach for ASF in smallholder settings.

All are available via the FAO Document Repository and various e-book platforms, so please feel free to download the publication below:
