Fisheries and aquaculture offer ample opportunities to reduce hunger and improve nutrition, alleviate poverty, generate economic
growth and ensure better use of natural resources. Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food sector and has the potential to meet the nutritional demands of a growing population.
However, overfishing, pollution, climate shocks and unmanaged aquaculture expansion are impacting aquatic resources and the
sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture.
The
State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA)
is a flagship report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which analyses the status of global stocks as well as trends in fisheries and aquaculture at a global and regional level.
The latest edition of the biennial report will be launched by
FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu,
at the UN Ocean Conference
in Lisbon, Portugal on 29 June at 14:15 CEST.
Peter Thomson, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean,
will address the event
and
Manuel Barange, Director of FAO’s Fisheries and Aquaculture division,
will provide a detailed presentation on SOFIA 2022’s major findings.
SOFIA is a critical reference for governments, policymakers, academics and others in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
The focus of the 2022 edition will be
Blue Transformation, a visionary
strategy designed to enhance the potential of aquatic food systems and sustainably feed the world’s growing
population while protecting the environment.
A panel of experts from the private and public sectors, civil society and non-governmental organizations, will discuss the report’s highlights
and discuss the challenges faced by the sector.
The launch will be preceded by a media briefing that will be webcast at 11.00 (CEST)
here.
FAO experts will be available for interviews. For more information contact:
