Almost daily, mass media portrays with sometimes opposing views the risks and benefits of TASF for human and planetary health. In response to this, the Committee on Agriculture (COAG) in October 2020 requested FAO to produce a “comprehensive, science and evidence-based global assessment of the contribution of livestock to food security, sustainable agrifood systems, nutrition and healthy diets<https://www.fao.org/coag/sub-committee-on-livestock/first-session/discussion-documents/en/>.” The assessment will be completed between 2021 and 2024, resulting in the preparation of four component documents. The first document developed under the auspices of the COAG, Contribution of terrestrial animal source food to healthy diets for improved nutrition and health outcomes – an evidence and policy overview on the state of knowledge and gaps<https://www.fao.org/3/cb8424en/cb8424en.pdf>, will form the basis for the proposed session. The purpose of this event is to identify and discuss the implications of current knowledge on the role of TASF as part of healthy diets, for better nutrition and health impacts. The session will emphasize: 1. The contemporary challenges faced within agrifood systems in the context of TASF consumption 2. How existing policies aim to tackle these challenges 3. Identify gaps between policy and practice and how these gaps can be bridged. A detailed agenda will be shared shortly. Interpretation will be available in all six UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish). Zoom registration required.
