Dear Mountain Partnership members and friends,
The recent publication of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report and its Cross-Chapter
Paper 5 on Mountains provides an opportunity to discuss how scientific evidence can be used to strengthen participation of mountain people in national and international policy processes. Understanding the need for adequate and coordinated support in mountain regions, the official COP 27 side event "IPCC Cross-Chapter Paper 5: Mountains - sharing knowledge
to promote adaptation initiatives in mountains" will focus on how to use science based information to promote the inclusion of mountains in the UNFCCC texts and how to promote pro- mountain policies within frameworks such as the Rio Conventions. It will discuss
the necessity of international stewardship, reinforced by a transdisciplinary approach, which includes all of these components to promote the science/policy nexus and support sustainable mountain development through a science and policy lens. Session aims
·
Consider how a science-policy dialogue (based on the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report and its Cross-Chapter Paper 5) focusing on mountains can be built within the framework
of the UNFCCC.
·
Discuss how to strengthen science-policy dialogue and investigate how findings coming from the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report and its Cross-Chapter Paper 5 can be used
to develop policies.
·
Share case studies of best practices in relation to promoting and scaling adaptation options that offer practical solutions to reduce climate risks and build on diverse
knowledge systems, including indigenous knowledge.
·
Discuss how to bridge existing gaps across different alliances and processes dedicated to sustainable mountain development. Which stakeholders need to be considered
and how could this coordination be enhanced? Session speakers
·
Carolina Adler, Executive Director, Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) (moderator)
·
Mirella Gallardo, Co-Director, The Mountain Institute (TMI)
·
Sam Kanyamibwa, Chief Executive Officer, Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS)
