Water is central to agriculture, which accounts for 72 percent of global freshwater withdrawals. And while awareness of
water’s importance is growing, much more still needs to be done to value and manage it in a coordinated and holistic way to achieve all the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs).
The Rome Water Dialogue
organized by FAO on 29 November 2022 (09:00 CET) is one of several key events on this theme in the lead-up to the UN 2023 Water Conference.
The dialogue will have a special focus
on how best to address the interlinked issues of water, sanitation, health, ecosystems, ocean, energy, food systems and nutrition and the rising trend of losses caused by water-related disasters, such as droughts, floods, cyclones, coastal surge, sea level
rise, salinity intrusion, mudslides and avalanches, with particular attention paid to people in vulnerable situations.
The event will provide an opportunity
to raise awareness of water’s role in achieving the SDGs, including the associated economic, social and environmental aspects; deepen the connection between the water sector and the largest water user – the agriculture sector; develop innovative solutions
and actions for the future and discuss the National Water Roadmap approach to achieving global commitments and SDGs at the national level.
It will begin with a one-hour high-level
opening segment followed by two technical sessions of 2 hours each.
